Fall Pumpkin Decorating Ideas

Fall is officially upon us, which means you’re likely being bombarded with pictures of pumpkins, riding boots, apple orchards, and selfies of the infamous Pumpkin Spiced Latte – or maybe you’re the one taking all the pictures! If you’re a tiny bit obsessed with the season {who could blame you?} and want a few fall pumpkin decorating ideas, this DIY for painted vintage pumpkins is really simple. The pumpkins are hand painted white and gold, producing a gorgeous look straight out of the Pottery Barn catalogue.

Fall Pumpkin Decorating Ideas – Painted Vintage Pumpkins

What You Need:

Any sized pumpkins – you choose the quantity
White and Gold Acrylic Craft Paint {the Martha Stewart brand works well}
Paint Brushes {I used a 3/4 in and 1/2 in for this project}

Let’s Get Started

1. First and foremost, wash your pumpkins to remove any dirt – a simple wipe-down with a dampened paper towel will do.

2. Set up your work station, with newspaper and clean brushes.

3. Apply the first layer of white paint on the pumpkin, leaving the very bottom for the end {for larger pumpkins use the 3/4 in brush}. Don’t leave any orange showing, especially around the handle – but don’t paint the handle white {I used a 1/2 in brush for this section}.

4. Before applying the second coat of white paint, let the pumpkin dry COMPLETELY – minimum of 10 minutes.

5. After the second coat of white paint has dried, tip the pumpkin over and paint the bottom – tilt to the side to dry.

6. Once the two coats of white paint have dried, lightly cover with pumpkin with gold paint. The goal is for the pumpkin to look vintage, so not completely gold or white. One coat of gold paint should allow you to achieve the right look.

7. Let the gold paint dry completely, flip the pumpkin over and paint the bottom.

8. Allow the pumpkin to dry completely and you’re done!
