In Defense of the Pinterest Mom

In Defense of the Pinterest Mom

I’ll be honest with you, I get excited when I walk into a craft store. I enjoy crafting, baking, DIYs, and cooking. I might be a Pinterest Mom.

The popular social media site has mixed reviews, with moms claiming to fall victim to “Pinterest Stress” because of it’s magazine quality depiction of children’s birthday parties and the like. Pinterest can be a showcase for creativity and diversity, but somewhere along the way it’s earned a less than desirable reputation amongst some crowds.

Long before the days of Pinterest my mom created homemade Halloween costumes, baked elaborate birthday cakes, and knitted afghans. She did all of this partly because she enjoyed it, she took recreational baking classes and met up with girlfriends to knit. Her so-to-speak “craftiness” wasn’t about creating enviable projects, it was about taking time for herself and surviving the daily grind with three young children. She also grabbed store-bought cookies when she needed to but made homemade pizza because it was a lot less expensive than ordering in.

Flash forward 25 years and apparently the apple didn’t fall very far from the tree. I enjoy a lot of the same things my mom once did – I cook a lot for my growing family, I create crafts and activities to play with my two-year-old daughter, and I relish the chance to eliminate the day’s stress with a paintbrush. But these hobbies and activities don’t define me as a mother.

Motherhood can be stressful, tiring, and as a stay-at-home-mom, sometimes I just need to put my hands to work and create something. My hobbies have taken on a new level of importance in my life now that I don’t have a job outside of the home. Aside from caring for my daughter, a job  I love, sometimes I need to feel a sense of accomplish that is all my own and if that comes in the form of painting mason jars, than so be it.

At the end of the day I’m not really a Pinterest Mom – I’m just surviving this parenting gig the best way I know how and that just might include perfectly frosted cupcakes from time to time.

Does Pinterest stress you out?
