The Union Square Greenmarket located in Downtown Manhattan is one of the largest farmers market in the city. The market is open weekly on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 8:00am to 6:00pm, serving the locals and tourists looking for fresh produce, beautiful flowers, and sweet treats. If you are looking for an activity for the kids to enjoy while visiting New York City, look no further than the greenmarket in Union Square and neighboring Evelyn’s Playground which is perfect for young children.
While a trip to the farmers market could feel a bit like running errands for the kids, there are several easy ways to spruce up a visit to the Union Square Greenmarket to create a memorable experience for the entire family!
1. Farmers Market Scavenger Hunt
The first kiddo to spot family favorites i.e.: strawberries, blueberry muffins, apple cider, fresh donuts, and Mom’s flowers gets out of one household chore.
2. People Watching
When you visit or live in NYC, people watching can be a similar experience to visiting an art museum and the greenmarket does not disappoint. Involve the kids by (politely) pointing out cool hats, sunglasses, funky shoes and so much more.
3. Shop For Fresh Produce
Since you’re at a farmers market, you might as well shop! Get the kiddos involved and accept some help in picking the produce, “Which cucumber do you think looks the best?” or “Would you rather have fresh blueberries or strawberries for a snack?” Depending on the age of your children, it might also be fun to strike up a conversation with the vendors and learn about where their products are grown, etc.
4. Eat!
The Union Square Greenmarket has an amazing selection of fresh produce, delicious baked goods, cheese, and so much more! Buy a selection for the family and enjoy a picnic at Union Square Park.
5. Evelyn’s Playground
The Union Square playground is the perfect place to run around and be a kid; my daughter had an absolute blast. The playground has swings, water sprinklers and fountains (seasonal), jungle gyms and lots of additional features to entertain the kids for as long as they’ll last.
A trip to the farmers market doesn’t need to be just about running errands, especially when you visit the Union Square Greenmarket in NYC. With so much to see and explore in NYC, you won’t want to miss an afternoon at the farmers market!

We haven’t been to NYC since before kids and we’re dying to come back:) Love the market pics and I will definitely put Evelyn’s playground on my list of things to see!
We visited NYC just after finishing up a work contract on a remote island in the Torres Strait – where fresh fruit and vegies were a rarity. This market looks amazing and I love the idea of a scavenger hunt.
