Homemade Baby Food: Sweet Potato

I blogged previously about introducing solid food to my six-month-old baby and as I mentioned, we started with oatmeal. My pediatrician recommended introducing veggies next instead of fruits because lets face it, fruits are generally much sweeter and tastier – it’s the equivalent of offering dessert before dinner. Her logic made perfect sense to me, so veggies it is!

I chose avocado as her first “veggie” and let’s just say she wasn’t a fan. Thankfully I was able to try the avocado again by using some mommy trickery and mixed the avocado with her oatmeal – success!

My plan is to start introducing a new vegetable every three days or so as it is recommended you wait before introducing a new food so you can easily identify the culprit if your baby has any type of allergic reaction. So far, so good. Up next, sweet potato.

I have to say, making homemade baby food has been much easier than I expected. I have yet to make any large batches of food as we are still experimenting and I don’t want to be wasteful of my over-priced WholeFoods products! Alas, below are the details of making sweet potato puree!

What you need:

Organic Sweet Potato (According to Baby Food 101 potatoes as susceptible to pesticides because of their thin skin, best to buy organic when available)
Breast Milk, Formula or Water
Tinfoil (for baking potatoes)
Food Processor/blender/immersion blender

Use a fork to poke several holes throughout the potato to allow for ventilation while cooking. Cook on a sheet of tinfoil at 425 for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
